Work and job seeking

The vast majority of adults living in Denmark have a job, both men and women.

In order to get work in Denmark, you will need to have qualifications and skills which match the existing job opportunities. Many jobs require you to have completed tertiary education of some duration. Virtually all jobs require that you are able to perform special tasks, or are willing to learn to do so. This is true even of jobs which do not require special education, such as cleaning or working in a factory, where there may be many tasks that you need to familiarise yourself with. This will also be the case if you want to run your own business or store.

The first job you get may not be your dream job, but it is important that you start working, as this gives you greater opportunities to develop your qualifications.

It is easier to get a job if you speak reasonable Danish, and it may even be an advantage in many places that you speak your own language as well as Danish.

If you have arrived in Denmark without a job, or wish to change job while resident here, you may contact one of the Workindenmark centres (see addresses below), or one of the general job centres, for assistance. You can find the addresses of the job centres by clicking here >>

You can take active steps to get a job:
*Write applications in response to newspaper job advertisements
*Send unsolicited applications to the workplaces where you would like to work, or contact them to ask about job opportunities
*Make use of your personal contact with others who are already in the labour force
*Apply for work through temp agencies
*Search on the Internet (you can get access to the Internet at a library or job centre)
*Place your own advertisement in a newspaper or on the Internet

Further information on the regulations which apply to working and residency are available at: www.workindenmark.dk
